Dear Author Winners Announced!
February 16, 2016 (Helena, MT)—For the 5th year in a row, Your Lewis & Clark Library hosted the “Dear Author” contest for students in grades 4th and 5th. On Tuesday, February 9th, the top five finalists were honored during an awards ceremony at the Library.
Youth Services Librarian Marissa Bazan explained that there were over 100 kids who submitted letters this year, representing Hawthorne, Jefferson, Kessler, Warren, and Montana City schools. Two finalists from Hawthorne and three finalists from Montana City School were honored at Tuesday night’s awards ceremony.
Each of the finalists received a Kindle Fire in a Lewis & Clark Library canvas bag and a monetary donation to their respective school libraries to buy books. The prizes are a generous donation from the Lewis & Clark Library Foundation.
“Dear Author” encourages students to read YRCA nominated books, past YRCA winners, or a Newberry Medal Winner and write a letter to the author of the book they chose. “The letters are not to be a book report,” explained Bazan. “Rather, they focus on what the book showed the reader about the world; or what did you realize about yourself as a result of reading the book; why was the book meaningful to you; or how did the author’s work influence you.”
