Living With Antique Furniture Restoration

May 30, 2014 (Helena, MT)—Like watching the Antique Road Show and wondering if any of the junk in your attic is show worthy? Join antique furniture restoration expert Michael Goater on Thursday, June 12, 7 PM, to learn about antique furniture restoration and conservation and who knows, maybe you can turn some of those items into treasures.

Goater who has a lifelong passion for antique furniture and its care and repair, explains that, “Antique furniture restoration is a fascinating occupation because it has so many different aspects. No two pieces can be treated the same, even when popular items have similar problems. Early in my career a very experienced restorer told me “Before you start the new piece stand it in a space, make a coffee, pull up your favorite chair a few feet away, sit down, light your pipe and think about it.” The restoration processes could cover replacing and matching missing timber, turning missing knobs, repairing locks and brassware, replacing inlays or cross banding, veneering, taking out warps in the top and leaves, removing stains, assessing the state of the patina to preserve or match it and selecting an appropriate finish.”

With nearly twenty years in the present business his expertise was recognized in 2002 when Michael Goater became a full, accredited member of BAFRA, the British Antique Furniture Restorers Association. He has served on BAFRA's Executive Committee for seven years and has just retired as chairman. For more information, visit www.michaelgoater.co.uk
