READ to Dogs @ the Library!
November 3, 2016 (Helena, MT)—Kids, unleash your reading skills and read to registered therapy animals! Parents and caregivers are invited to bring their children ages 5-11 to the Library on Saturday, November 12th and Saturday, December 17th to read to registered therapy dogs and cats.
Youth Services Librarian Marissa Bazan explains that “reading aloud to registered therapy animals encourages children to practice their reading.” Bazan goes on to explain that this program is especially beneficial to reluctant readers as “animals are great listeners, non-judgmental, and give kids the opportunity to practice reading in a relaxed atmosphere.”
Children are encouraged to come join us in a fun, relaxed atmosphere to read aloud to registered therapy animals on Saturday, November 12th at 10:30AM and again on Saturday, December 17th at 10:30AM. Registration is required by calling the Information Desk at 406.447.1690 ext 5.
“To ensure that each child receives maximum attention from their canine partner we have a few simple rules,” explained Bazan. To begin with, all kids who participate must be able to read. “This program is designed to help new readers become more confident and comfortable with the reading process, that’s why we partner them with registered therapy dogs who listen non-judgmentally and provide needed encouragement at this important stage of the beginning reading process.”
The next simple rule is that parents and siblings must wait in the lobby. “Again, we really want to create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere for these young readers to practice their skills,” stated Bazan.
Kids can bring their own book to read or select from an assortment of books on hand the day of the event.
Bazan is appreciative of the program sponsor without whom this program would not be possible. “We wouldn’t be able to offer this program if it weren’t for the willingness and dedication of the Helena Chapter of Intermountain Therapy Animals and Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D).”
All dogs are registered and have current health certificates from a veterinarian.
