Lewis & Clark Library does not charge for interlibrary loans. About 10% of libraries do charge, in which case the cost is passed on to you. You can then expect to be charged $15-25.
We never use charging resources unless we are unable to get the item elsewhere and only with your OK. Please indicate what you are willing to pay.
You can make up to 10 requests per month. Failure to pick up or refusal of interlibrary loan materials requested could result in suspension of interlibrary loan borrowing privileges.
It can take up to 3 weeks to receive your item. If you are concerned, call the Interlibrary Loan Department at 406-447-1690, ext. 114, or the information desk at ext. 5 for a status check.
Call 406-447-1690, ext. 6, or visit the Circulation Desk before the due date. Some items are nonrenewable. You will need to give your name, patron barcode number, and the barcode number on the bookmark. We will let you know if the lender denies the renewal.
Genealogies are difficult to borrow. Please always make genealogy requests in the form of photocopy requests, since most libraries will not lend entire volumes. Fewer copies were printed and they are rare. They may be only available on microfilm.
Sometimes they may be restricted to in-library use. There is frequently a charge. Check individual state historical society sites for newspaper reel numbers and costs. There are only a few who will not lend their film.
In your search for information, don't forget about the Lewis & Clark County Genealogical Society. Ancestry.com can be used on the library computers. Heritage Quest can be used from home using your library card and password.
Another good local resource is the Family History Center at 1610 East 6th Avenue. Their phone number is 406-443-0716.
If you're submitting multiple requests, you can help us by initiating those requests yourself from WorldCat. You will need your library card number and a password we will give you at the Information Desk. You can also call the Information desk at 406-447-1690, ext. 5. Your library card must be in good standing.
Requests can also be sent directly to the interlibrary loan department.
