Yoga for Balance

Thursday, February 15, 2018

Bring your own lunch and discuss yoga for healthy aging. This is a discussion group (no physical yoga), and is free and open to everyone.

Yoga for Healthy Aging
No matter how old we are, we are all aging! And, none of us are immune to aging's effects. Once a month, the library will host local yoga teacher Anna Bradley, ERYT-200, and a discussion on yoga for healthy aging. Yoga provides us with tools and techniques to take care of ourselves; a well-rounded yoga practice maintains strength, balance, and flexibility in both the mind and body. Throughout this series, we will learn some of the science behind how yoga helps our bodies age well and some tips for integrating yoga into our daily lives.

February's topic: Yoga for Balance
It's no surprise that our bodies experience physical changes as we age. Unfortunately, some of these changes can make us more susceptible to falls and injuries if we aren't careful. Our muscle fibers change in a way that leads our reaction times to decline, joints and muscles stiffen and reduce range of motion, and our awareness of where our bodies are in space (our "proprioception") becomes limited. Yoga can help us play with skills like controlled physical instability while helping us with balance in other areas of our lives.

Anna's bio:
Anna is a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT). In addition to her 200-hour certification, she has trained with the Veterans Yoga Project, the Baptiste Institute, Yoga Activist, and JoAnn Lyons with the Piedmont Yoga Community to expand her knowledge. She is currently working on becoming certified at the 500-hour level.

Anna is passionate about both the physical and mental aspects of yoga, and how we can take our practice with us when we leave our mats. She hopes to offer students a practice that helps them live more authentically as themselves.
