Read Magazines Online, Part 2: Finding Consumer Reports on MasterFILE Complete

The print magazine collection is temporarily unavailable at the Lewis & Clark Library, but many of these magazines can be read online with your library card. This series will show you what’s available where, and how to get started. Part 1 is here

MasterFILE Complete is a large, complex database of magazines and other publications. To keep things simple, this article has a very specific mission: locate and browse the Consumer Reports April 2020 Auto Issue

Start here: Click the image link to MasterFILE Complete. On the next screen, enter your library card number under Patron ID and click Sign In. (No password or PIN is necessary.)

Next, scroll down the page to find MasterFILE Completeand [important!] click the link Title List as shown below. This allows browsing by the magazine title, year, and month rather than doing a database search which can have less straightforward results.

Mag 1

On the following screen, look for the search box under Browsing: MasterFILE Complete - Publications and type Consumer ReportsClick the Browse button as shown in the next screenThe first two results are Consumer Reports, the monthly magazine, and Consumer Reports Buying Guide, the annual publication. For our mission, click Consumer Reports.

Mag 2

The next page shows more details about the publication. Look for the All Issues list in the right column (or at the bottom of the page, if your screen is narrow). Click a year link to show more links to individual issues published that yearNow click the link Vol. 85 Issue 4 – Apr2020We’re almost there!

Let’s say we want to read about the 10 Top Picks which is the third article in the list. To go directly to the article, rather than clicking the article title, click the link to PDF Full Text below the article title, as shown below.

Mag 3

Finally – we see the article, just as it was printed in the paper version of the magazine. From here you can print or download individual articles, or use the scrollbar to the right of the article to read it.

Mag 4

Later this week, look for another blog post in this series. We’ll explore how to navigate in articles, issues, and browse more issues of Consumer Reports and other magazines using this same system.
