Posted on August 19, 2022 at 3:53 PM by Beth Pofahl

These hot days of summer just won't let up. It's a good thing we've got lots of cool book recommendations! Read on to hear about some of our latest favorites.

Max suggests . . . Water for Elephants book coverWater for Elephants
by Sara Gruen

A volatile love triangle traverses the U.S. on railroad cars full of beasts and beauties, only some of whom are animals. Experience the story through the wizened eyes of an elderly man whose youthful plans ran afoul during the Great Depression and led him to train hopping, and, consequentially, to joining the Benzini Brothers Circus. This vibrant novel explores the meaning of home, the essence of belonging, and the potential brought by desperate times for degradation and exaltation alike.

This book is really popular right now! Matt Haig’s imaginative treatment of how the choices we make in life may result in vastly different outcomes has stuck with me for a long time. I enjoyed reading it.

A sweeping novel of one family's experience through generations in Latin America during a revolution that changed their way of life and futures. A beautiful magical realism novel full of love and subtle magic.

 April suggests... Heartburn book coverHeartburn
by Nora Ephron

Rachael, a culinary author and seven months pregnant with her second child finds out her husband is having an affair...a depressing sounding beginning-right? Wrong!  Expertly read by Meryl Streep, I often laughed out loud!  Yet, the author with a dry humor, expertly touches on the complexities of why we fall in love, betrayal, parenting, and life!!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Evelyn Hugo, an aging actress who began her Hollywood career in the 1950s, offers to reveal all of her life's secrets to novice journalist Monique Grant. Monique is shocked when Evelyn offers her full rights to the story, but only after the celebrity's death. Monique will make a fortune, but there is one catch. The story builds upon the deceitful images and rumors which go along with the star's struggle to advance her career.
